The “after” is only meaningful because the “before” exists

British photographer Margot Raggett created a conservation photography project called Remembering Elephants, documenting elephants that were still very much alive. She chose the title deliberately because it sounded premature.
Memorials usually come after something has been lost. Her elephants were still there, but the title forced people to confront the possibility that one day photographs might be all that remained.
That idea stayed with me because we do something similar with places. We move through buildings, landscapes, roads and infrastructure as though their current condition is permanent. Most of the time, we have no reason to think otherwise. Until one day it changes—and the version we remember is suddenly the version we can no longer document.
We tend to think about documenting places after something happens to them. A site is redeveloped. A runway is reconstructed. A building is demolished. A landscape is disturbed. Drainage changes. Pavement is replaced. Vegetation is removed. A dispute arises. And only then does someone ask the question that suddenly matters very much: What did this place look like before?
That is usually when the search begins.
People start looking through old photographs, satellite imagery, construction drawings, archived plans, phone pictures, previous surveys and whatever other fragments might exist. Sometimes those records are enough to reconstruct what was there. Sometimes they are incomplete. Sometimes they were never intended to answer the question now being asked. And sometimes the most important detail simply was not captured because nobody knew at the time that it would later matter.
The problem is simple: once a place changes, the opportunity to document its previous condition is gone.
You can photograph what exists today. You can measure what exists today. You can study records of what existed before. But you cannot return to yesterday and collect new information from it.
That is where aerial data becomes more interesting than aerial photography alone.
A conventional photograph can preserve a view. A properly planned aerial mapping mission can preserve the spatial relationships across an entire site. A high-resolution orthomosaic can provide a detailed, geometrically consistent overhead record. A three-dimensional model can preserve how buildings, terrain, vegetation, pavement and other features relate to one another. Additional captures over time can create a sequence showing how those conditions changed.
The difference is context.
A photograph may tell you that a feature existed. A mapped dataset can help show where it existed, what surrounded it and how it related to the rest of the site. That distinction may not matter on the day the data is collected. Nothing may be wrong. There may be no dispute, no claim and no immediate reason to inspect every square foot of the site.
In many cases, that is precisely when the cleanest baseline can be created.
Construction is an obvious example. Before equipment arrives, materials are staged, grading begins or temporary access roads appear, the site has a condition that will never exist in exactly the same way again. Capturing that condition can create a visual baseline before work starts. Later, if questions arise about existing pavement, drainage, vegetation, site access, disturbed areas or surrounding conditions, there is something more useful to reference than memory.
The same logic applies at airports. Pavement changes. Markings change. Drainage features are repaired. Shoulders are disturbed. Construction phases alter how an area looks and functions. A detailed aerial record created before rehabilitation can preserve the condition of the site in a way that scattered photographs often cannot.
For property owners and developers, the value may be different but the principle is the same. A site can be documented before grading, demolition, redevelopment or landscape changes begin. For engineering teams, the record may help preserve existing conditions across a larger area than traditional ground photographs practically cover. For legal or insurance matters, a pre-event dataset may eventually help answer questions nobody anticipated when the flight was performed.
That does not mean every property needs to be flown constantly or that every aerial dataset will someday become evidence. Most will not.
That is not the argument.
The more important point is that physical places are always changing, while our memory of their previous condition becomes less precise over time. We remember the large changes. We are much less reliable with details. Where exactly did that drainage path run? How wide was that disturbed area? Was that surface already damaged? How dense was the vegetation? What occupied that corner of the property before the work began?
Those are the kinds of questions that are easy to dismiss when the answers are still visible and surprisingly difficult to resolve once they are gone.
There is a reason “before and after” imagery is so powerful. The “after” is only meaningful because the “before” exists. Yet in many projects, tremendous effort goes into documenting progress after work begins while comparatively little effort is spent preserving the original condition in a comprehensive way.
That may be backwards.
A baseline dataset does not predict the future. It does not eliminate disagreements. It does not replace surveys, engineering records, inspections or other forms of documentation. What it can do is preserve a detailed visual and spatial record of a site at a known point in time.
Sometimes that record may never be needed for anything beyond project documentation.
Sometimes it may become remarkably valuable.
The difficulty is that you usually do not know which one it will be when you create it.
And perhaps that is the part of Margot Raggett’s idea that stayed with me most. The value of a record is not always obvious while the subject is still in front of us. We tend to appreciate documentation most after the moment it preserved can no longer be recreated.
For aerial data, that moment may be a landscape before development, an airport before reconstruction, a property before grading or simply a site before years of incremental change.
The technology gives us the ability to preserve that moment with extraordinary detail.
The question is whether we think to do it while the moment still exists.
Because once the present becomes the past, we can study it.
We can interpret it.
We can argue about it.
But we cannot fly back and collect it again.
